Phones and fridges don’t mix experts warn

Putting a hot phone in the fridge might seem like a quick fix, but repair shops across Europe are seeing more devices damaged by the practice.

The problem with cold storage

When a phone overheats, some users reach for the fridge or freezer. The idea is straightforward: cold air should cool the device faster. The actual outcome is different.

Condensation causes most of the damage. A hot phone in a cold environment collects moisture inside, which settles on internal parts. That moisture remains even after the phone warms up, leading to corrosion or electrical shorts.

Temperature shifts also harm the battery. Sudden cooling can crack the screen or reduce battery life. Lithium-ion batteries suffer the most, as rapid cooling weakens their performance over time.

Technicians have noticed more phones damaged this way, especially in summer.

Safer ways to cool a phone

Better methods exist to lower a phone’s temperature without causing harm. Removing the case helps heat escape. Placing the device on a cool surface, like a countertop, also works, though it takes longer than refrigeration.

Some users prefer thermal pouches or portable fans. MagSafe-compatible cooling fans attach to the back of the device and circulate air without extreme temperature exposure. These options are safer than a fridge but still effective.

If a phone overheats, the safest response is often to turn it off and leave it in a shaded, ventilated area. The process may take 10 or 15 minutes, but it avoids long-term damage.

When temperature shifts are less risky

Not all temperature changes are equally harmful. Moving a phone from a hot car to an air-conditioned room rarely causes condensation. The real danger comes from extreme, rapid shifts—like going from overheating to near-freezing in minutes.

Winter conditions present different risks. Cold weather drains batteries faster, but condensation forms when the phone returns to warmth. A phone left in a cold car overnight may fog up indoors, though the effect is usually milder than fridge-induced shock.

If a phone feels too hot, aggressive cooling is unnecessary. A well-ventilated spot and a little patience prevent most problems.
